jon klassen doodle
A couple images from today at the Children's Book Ireland Annual Conference: Here's my sketch of Jon Klassen, author of I Want My Hat Back, giving his talk. I love that book so much, how deadpan it all is. Jon said something about his characters in it being bad actors, just going through their lines. Which is terribly funny. Read it, if you haven't.

I'm not quite sure why this Vimeo version of it lists it as R-rated. I suppose it does have a disturbing element to it.

And Hervé Tullet with his book's gaping plot hole:

Herve's been introducing me to Leó Ferré this evening.

science
If I could clone myself. And then shrink my clone down until he was about 3 inches tall, I could find out if Roswell would eat me if I was little without actually having to die to find out.

I'm pretty sure she'd eat me.

Lookin' like a fool with your ants on the ground
It's ant season, one of the few drawbacks to spring. Usually this time of year, one or the other of us discovers ants crawling around by the front door, we utter something generally unprintable, and then we spray them down and clean them up. This year, however, something odd is going on. Instead of them crawling, they're just showing up dead. Like, we never see them move, but there will be a couple dozen of them lined up along the baseboards. What is killing them? Why are they magically appearing on the floor by the door? It baffles.

What Did The Protagonist Miss?
After a long absence, Hollywood screenwriter and Friend of Venture Todd Alcott is back at his old game of analyzing episodes of The Venture Bros., and, completist that he is, he's hell-bent on catching up with everything he missed. Starting with, weirdly enough, 2003's pilot episode, "The Terrible Secret of Turtle Bay." Check out his website HERE.

Reminder: MANOS: THE HANDS OF FELT Kickstarter
Hilarious idea. They could use a little g... love.

Any others we should know about? Any of the main services -- IndieGoGo, GoFundMe, others I'm sure I've never heard of but are out there.

Hilarious
Sitting in an A-Kon press meeting watching a teenage girl teach a 40ish friend of ours how to use Tumblr so he can get K-pop news.

He's now calling it "The Tumblr" and we're telling him he's officially an old man.

Blogs I Love: The Quitting Lawyer and the Despondent Millionaire | Mr. Money Mustache

I love this gentleman's blog for a zillion reasons, but the core of them is SO well summed up in this latest post, I just had to re-offer it:

The Quitting Lawyer and the Despondent Millionaire | Mr. Money Mustache.

Excerpt:

The exact same world can seem like an evil or beautiful place, based purely on how you choose to think about it. And paradoxically enough, changing the perspective (and thus the behavior) of enough people can even change the physical reality of the world for the better. That makes “just changing your perspective” into a pretty powerful tool.

My biggest secret to wealth is realizing just how little money it really takes to lead an extremely rich life. But the biggest battle I face in sharing it is the different perspective that is programmed into the modern rich-world consumer: the perspective that simplicity is deprivation, change is scary, and effort is something best paved over with convenience.

That would speak to me anyway, but having fallen into this at-first-unintentional slimming-down of lifestyle myself, I read that and I want to cheer.  And cry.  And cheer some more.

It's been a weird week.  ;)

10 photos from SFWA’s 2003 Nebula Awards weekend

Originally published at Scott Edelman. Please leave any comments there.

The Nebulas Awards banquet was held last night in San Jose, and usually, I’d have been there. But this year, I wanted to attend the the March George Formby Society Convention in Blackpool, and so something had to give—which meant the Nebulas as well as this year’s World Horror Convention in New Orleans were out.

So I amused myself this weekend by looking back two years to my photos from 2003 Nebula Awards weekend and sharing them on Twitter, but thought I should gather them together here as well.

So get ready to flashback to a gentler, more innocent time …
